What is Glutaglow® Glutathione Peel

Glutathione Peeling is a powerful anti-oxidant that shows good results in whitening treatments. It can be applied in the face but also in darker parts of the body. It provides the skin with a radiant glow, redefining pores and improving coetaneous hyperpigmentation.

The Glutaglow Peel is the only medical-grade chemical peel that features Glutathione 1% in its composition. Glutathione is a very potent peptide that is commonly used as a brightener and is a coenzyme that helps reduce inflammatory reactions in the cells. Recently it’s experienced a surge in popularity, with glutathione drips and supplements used in many forms of anti-aging and healing therapies. Created by E-Derma, an Indian-based beauty, pharmaceutical and chemical research company, this medium-degree peel is only available for purchase in the Okdermo store.

The Glutaglow® Glutathione Peel is the only peel that includes the ingredient glutathione 1%, a strong antioxidant that is naturally produced by the body’s cells. Glutathione protects the body against destructive free radicals and harmful substances such as environmental pollutants. This provides the body with a wealth of health benefits including liver detoxification and hyperpigmentation treatment. Studies have shown that glutathione is also effective in fighting fine lines and wrinkles. This is due to glutathione’s strength as an antioxidant, making it a powerful defense against aging.

Melasma Peel Treatment with Glutaglow® Glutathione Peel

Melasma is a common skin condition that produces brown or gray-brown patches on the face, usually due to a hormonal imbalance. The Glutaglow® Glutathione Peel combats melasma using its combination of glutathione and kojic acid. Glutathione lightens skin by converting melanin to a lighter color and deactivating the enzyme tyrosinase, which helps produce the darker pigment. Kojic acid fights hyperpigmentation by decreasing melanin production. This effectively and naturally results in dark spot removal and a bright, even-toned complexion.

The benefits of Glutaglow® Glutathione Peel are the following:

  • Lighten naturally dark skin
  • Lighten hyperpigmentation
  • Lighten acne scars and dark spots
  • Lighten the skin tone and age spots
  • Repairs photodamaged skin
  • Lighten freckles

Main ingredients of Glutaglow® Glutathione Peel

While glutathione is the main ingredient, the peel also has a blend of other acids, powerful antioxidants, and peptides such as:

Glycolic acid 45% is Alpha-hydroxy acid, which are commonly found and isolated from fruits of all sorts. That is why they are referred to as fruit acids. For example, malic acid is found in apples, citric acid can be isolated from most citrus fruits and glycolic acid is commonly found in honey and sugar cane. Glycolic acid works as an exfoliating agent because of its high acidity but easy solubility. When placed on the skin as part of an exfoliating peel, glycolic acid goes under the damaged upper layers of skin and destroys the ‘glue’, which holds dead skin to the surface. As this dead skin is chemically burned off, the other ingredients carry the individual flakes away and a water rinse neutralizes the remaining acid. The result is a much smoother skin surface and a more youthful appearance. A secondary benefit is glycolic acid’s ability to draw moisturizers into the newly exfoliated skin surface.

One study showed that topical treatment twice a day for 3 months with 5% glycolic acid at pH 2.8 affected surface and epidermal changes, while the same treatment, but with a 12%  reached deeper and influenced both the epidermis and the deeper dermis layer, and resulted in increased epidermal and dermal firmness and thickness. Both showed clinical improvement in skin smoothness and in the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Another study showed that AHAs might thin the outer stratum corneum, but actually end up increasing the overall thickness of the epidermis. This thickening is accompanied by an increased synthesis of collagen. It is apparent that alpha-hydroxy acids may do more than just increase exfoliation and skin cell turnover.

Lactic Acid 10% – Lactic acid is an antiwrinkle and pigmentation-fighting ingredient found in over-the-counter (OTC) and professional-grade skincare products. Derived from milk, lactic acid belongs to a class of anti-aging ingredients called alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). Other examples of AHAs include glycolic acid and citric acid. Lactic acid is used to create a mild chemical peel that can help even out your skin tone. It can help address age spots, melasma, and rough texture, along with fine lines.

Salicylic acid 0.5% – what all of this means is that salicylic acid can get deep into your skin to do its job. This quality is precisely what makes salicylic acid such a potent ingredient for targeting acne – especially for blackheads and whiteheads. Once it penetrates the skin, salicylic acid dissolves skin debris that clogs pores, acts as an anti-inflammatory and also helps red inflamed pimples and pustules go away faster. The ingredient can penetrate so deeply into skin that actually breaks down the connections between skin cells. Once it has penetrated the skin, the acid part of the molecule can dissolve some of the intracellular ‘glue’ that holds skin cells together.

This breaking down of skin cells also promotes exfoliation. Salicylic acid is considered a keratolytic medication, which means that it’s perfect for supreme exfoliation. Keratolytic medications cause softening and sloughing of the top layer of skin cells. Salicylic acid also loosens and breaks apart desmosomes (attachments between cells in the outer layer of skin). This ‘desmolytic’ action encourages exfoliation of the skin and unclogging of pores. One thought etiology of acne is that the skin cells do not behave normally, and rather than sloughing off through a healthy skin cell cycle, they stick together and clog the pores, creating cysts and blackheads. Salicylic acid aids in removing and loosening these skin cells and helps to dissolve the blackheads.

Kojic Acid Dipalmitate 7% – This naturally derived chemical peel component will dramatically improve the appearance of fine lines, shrink pores, and increase skin’s elasticity for a youthful and flawless glow. Glutaglow Peel is enhanced with Kojic acid, a natural skin brightener with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which fades dark spots and inhibits melanin production

Lemon Peel Extract 2% – Lemon Peel Extract has been shown to lighten, smooth and cleanse skin as well as treat acne. It does this using citric and plant acids to remove dead skin. The anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties of lemons also help clean the areas to which it is applied.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) 5% – Shea Butter is the creamy fat extracted from the nut of the African Butyrospermum parkii tree. Shea butter has been used for millennia in Africa and for more than 60 years in edible specialty fat formulations and chocolate. While it’s been used on skin and hair for generations in some parts of the world (it was even one of Cleopatra’s favorites!), it’s only made its debut in commercial products in the US in the past few decades. Now, it’s a staple in many cosmetic, hair, and body care products because it’s an incredibly effective nourishing moisturizer that also soothes skin. We use organic shea butter in Glutaglow Peel because of its proven skincare benefits. Plus, it’s plant-derived and it’s so safe the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers shea butter as edible and “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS). Safe, and effective – that’s what we love!

Phenoxy Ethanol 0.5% – Phenoxyethanol is a preservative used in many cosmetics and personal care products. You may have a cabinet full of products containing this ingredient in your home, whether you know it or not. Chemically, phenoxyethanol is known as glycol ether, or in other words, a solvent, an oily, slightly sticky liquid with a faint rose-like scent.

The Glutaglow® Glutathione Peel ingredients are mostly for hyperpigmentation or to reduce scarring. The benefits of the peel – some of the more noticeable benefits are improved tone, tightness, and brightness of the skin, as well as a reduction in acne and sun damage. The typical patient will have an immediate reduction in dullness and enjoy smoother complexion. In short, all these ingredients work to improve your overall complexion. For maximum benefits and maintenance, experts recommend a series of two to four peels, four weeks apart. Afterward, treatments only need to be performed once every three to six months to maintain results.
