What is Coal Tar 4% + Ketoconazole 2% Lotion Protar-K®
Protar-K® Solution is used to treat and prevent dandruff and dry or greasy scaling of the scalp (seborrhoeic dermatitis), which is a more severe kind of dandruff. This medication is used on the hair/scalp to treat dandruff and other scaly, itchy skin conditions (psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis). Coal tar belongs to a class of drugs known as keratoplasty. It works by causing the skin to shed dead cells from its top layer and slow down the growth of skin cells. This effect decreases scaling and dryness. Coal tar can also decrease itchiness from these skin conditions.
Protar-K® Solution is used for the treatment of dandruff. Protar-K Solution works as an antifungal lotion where it stops the growth of dandruff-causing fungi. Protar-K Solution works to prevent the formation of cell walls on the fungal cells. Protar-K Solution is also keratolytic which works to break down skin clumps on the scalp and relieve itching and flaking.
Protar-K® Solution is a combination of two medicines that effectively treat dandruff. It kills the fungi that cause the infection and relieves itching and irritation. It also removes dead skin cells from the scalp. Protar-K® Solution is only meant for external use and should be used as advised by your doctor. Protar-K® Solution is a combination of two medicines: Ketoconazole and Coal Tar which treat dandruff. Ketoconazole is an antifungal. It works by stopping the growth of dandruff-causing fungi by preventing them from forming their own protective covering. Coal Tar is a keratolytic medicine that helps break down the skin clumps on the scalp and relieves itching and flaking associated with dandruff.
A thin layer of the medicine should be applied only to the affected areas of the skin with clean and dry hands. Wash your hands before and after application of the medicine. If it gets into your eyes, nose, or mouth rinse with water. It may take several days to weeks for your symptoms to improve, but you should keep using this medicine regularly. The course of the treatment should be completed to ensure the better efficacy of the medicine.
This medicine is usually safe, however, it may cause burning, irritation, itching, and redness at the application site. These side effects are usually mild and self-limiting. Serious side effects are rare. It is not likely that other medicines you take by mouth or injection will affect the way this medicine works, but talk to your doctor before using it if you have recently used another medicine for dandruff. The medicine is not recommended for pregnant women. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctors before using this medicine.
Ketoconazole 2% – is used to treat skin infections such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and certain kinds of dandruff. This medication is also used to treat a skin condition known as pityriasis (tinea versicolor), a fungal infection that causes a lightening or darkening of the skin of the neck, chest, arms, or legs.
