I used PTU successfully during my last bout with Grave’s Disease. This time almost immediately I had a bad reaction.

  2. Slater

I have been taking this medication for over 10 years. It took some time to figure out the proper dosage for me, but that isn’t unusual, and it changed over time, when my Graves’s Disease became well under control. Right now I take 50 mg. one day, and 100 the next, to regulate my thyroid. In the beginning, I was taking much more, to get things under control. There is a preferred (by doctors) drug for my condition, but I was allergic to it. My endocrinologist doesn’t want me to stay on it, because of possible side effects (liver disease, lowered white count), but as long as I am feeling well, I see no reason to stop taking it. I do have a lower than normal white count, but I always have (but not this low), and I haven’t had an increased amount of illness (like colds, etc.) The alternative is RAI, Radioactive Iodine to destroy the thyroid, but I don’t want to do that until absolutely necessary.
