8X Antifungal Shampoo from Cipla contains Ciclopirox Olamine 1% and Zinc Pyrithione (ZPTO) 1%. 8X Shampoo is indicated for the topical treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis, also called seborrheic eczema of the scalp. Seborrhoeic dermatitis, also known as seborrhea, is a long-term skin disorder. Symptoms include red, scaly, greasy, itchy, and inflamed skin. Areas of the skin rich in oil-producing glands are often affected including the scalp, face, and chest. It can result in social or self-esteem problems. In babies, when the scalp is primarily involved, it is called cradle cap. Dandruff is a milder form of the condition, without associated inflammation.
The typical and effective treatment is antifungal cream and anti-inflammatory agents. Specifically, ketoconazole or ciclopirox are effective, also other antifungals, such as miconazole, are equally effective. Other options may include coal tar and phototherapy.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS OF 8X ANTIFUNGAL SHAMPOO
Ciclopirox Olamine 1% – is considered a hydroxypyrimidine synthetic antifungal agent for topical dermatologic treatment of superficial mycoses. It is most useful and effective against fungus tinea versicolor. Ciclopirox is indicated for the treatment of tinea pedis and tinea corporis due to Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Epidermophyton floccosum, as well as seborrheic dermatitis. It is not to be used in the eyes or vagina, and nursing women should consult their doctors before use since it is not known whether ciclopirox passes into human milk. A burning sensation may be felt when first applying ciclopirox.
In contrast to the azoles and other antimycotic drugs, the mechanism of action of ciclopirox is poorly understood. However, loss of function of certain catalase and peroxidase enzymes has been implicated as the mechanism of action, as well as various other components of cellular metabolism. In a study conducted to further elucidate ciclopirox’s mechanism, several Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants were screened and tested. Results from an interpretation of the effects of both the drug treatment and mutation suggested that ciclopirox may exert its effect by disrupting DNA repair, cell division signals and structures (mitotic spindles) as well as some elements of intracellular transport. It acts by inhibiting the membrane transfer system by interrupting the Na+ K+ ATPase. It is currently being investigated as an alternative treatment to ketoconazole for seborrhoeic dermatitis as it suppresses the growth of the yeast Malassezia furfur. Initial results show similar efficacy to ketoconazole with a relative increase in subjective symptom relief due to its inherent anti-inflammatory properties.
Zinc Pyrithione (ZPTO) 1% – Zinc pyrithione (or pyrithione zinc) is a coordination complex of zinc. It has fungistatic (that is, it inhibits the division of fungal cells) and bacteriostatic (inhibits bacterial cell division) properties and is used effectively in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis. Zinc pyrithione is best known for its use in treating dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, particularly in dandruff shampoos. It also has antibacterial properties and is effective against many pathogens from the Streptococcus and Staphylococcus genera. Its other medical applications include treatments of psoriasis, eczema, ringworm, fungus, athletes foot, dry skin, atopic dermatitis, tinea, and vitiligo.
HOW TO USE 8X ANTIFUNGAL SHAMPOO
Apply approximately 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of 8X Shampoo onto the wet hair scalp. Up to 2 teaspoons (10 mL) may be used for long hair. Lather and leave on hair and scalp for 3 minutes. Avoid contact with eyes. Rinse off. Treatment should be repeated twice per week for 4 weeks, with a minimum of 3 days between applications. If a patient with seborrhoeic dermatitis shows no clinical improvement after 4 weeks of treatment with 8X Shampoo, the diagnosis should be reviewed.
